Alan Simmons on Oh, Tokyo!..
For Tokyo 2020 we have tried to use some Japanese instruments. We don’t have the real thing but the computer-generated sounds are quite good, so you will hear the opening phrase played on a Shamisen and a Koto, accompanied by Taiko and Surdo drums. It’s very different from the rest of the ‘Olympics’ collection but it’s great fun to test your Japanese style! As more instruments are introduced the song, even though its short, builds up to a final climax.
The song can be sung in the western tradition whilst the accompaniment will add the Japanese flavour. Many of you will remember the drummers playing for each match in the rugby world cup. We’ve tried to include those sounds in the song.
It’s in unison, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn once you have come to terms with words like “Okonomiyaki”!
