A study of nostalgia and inflation. Commissioned by the Dodworth Male Voice Choir who, when established, had an annual subscription of Five Shillings. This led Alan to think of the value of Five Shillings.
A study of nostalgia and inflation. This song was commissioned by the Dodworth Male Voice Choir for their Golden Jubilee. The idea for the theme came from reading the history of the choir. When the current choir was established an annual subscription of Five Shillings was fixed for members who were not Dodworth Colliery workers. Although there are no written records, we know that other male voice choirs existed in Dodworth many years before that. At the time of these first choirs Five Shillings was probably a typical weekly wage! This led Alan to think of the value of Five Shillings and how it probably differed greatly not only between the two periods of history, but also between the vastly different reasons for these two similar sums being spent!
