A setting of the Auden poem. The scene is set with a relatively long piano introduction. When the voices enter, we build the sense of the trains journey along the rising track to Beattock. The music slows as we begin the descent into Glasgow giving Auden the space to describe the Scottish scenery before we pick up the tempo, then split into two parts for the excitement of the arrival of the mail. An exhilarating piece that builds and tells the story beautifully – both in words and music. Originally written for York MVC.
